| Ice Prevention & Snow
Melting Systems.
|
| In the winter months, serious
injury can occur from the
formation of ice on work
platforms in warehouse loading
bays or on entrance walkways
to busy public buildings etc.
This potential threat can easily
be minimised by installing an
ice prevention system. |
| In the case of snow fall, an ice
prevention system will quickly
melt any snow providing clear,
safe access for pedestrians and
vehicles on pavements and
drives. |
| MPSV heating cable rated at
20 watts/lin metre is used for
ice and snow melting of
outdoor areas and other
applications where the cable
is imbedded in concrete. |
|
The most common application
in industry is heating of ramp
or loading platforms in
factories and warehouses,
where an ice prevention
system can reduce the risk of
accidents and ensure work can
be carried out at all times. |
| There are however a variety of applications for ice and
snow melting such as car parks,
garage drive ways, pavements
and outdoor steps that can be
kept clear of snow & ice
making salt application & snow
shovelling unneccessary. |
 |
| Controls |
| It is recommended that the
heating cable in an ice and
snow melting application is
controlled by a fully automatic
ice detector. The unit utilises
two sensitive temperature and
humidity sensors, one to
detect ice and snow conditions
the other to monitor the
conditions of the heated
surface. This offers the user
the most energy efficient ice
prevention/snow melting
control system available. |

| Ice & Snow Melting |
| To determine the power
output required for frost
protection (W/m2) several
factors have to be considered.
These include the application
and place it is to be installed,
the lowest outdoor
temperature expected during
the winter, the finished surface
covering and how deep the
cables are installed. The extent
of exposure to wind and the
amount of under-cable
insulation to be used should
also be taken into
consideration. |
| In general, a guide of between
200-250 W/m2 would be
appropriate for most
applications in the UK climate. |
 |
| The very sensitive ice detector
automatically switches on the
heating system outside only if
there is the danger of black
ice, ie snow, ice or sleet and
is switched off again after
thawing. |
| The system is only in
operation for the period when
it is absolutely necessary which
reduces systems operating
costs to a minimum. This fully
automatic system prevents any
potential problems or dangers
caused by ice & snow during
the winter season. |
| The costs of installing and
running an ice & snow
prevention system are small
when the preventative
advantages of the system are
taken into consideration. |
